When pathogens like viruses, parasites, fungi or bacterium enter our body, they can cause infections. There are various types of infections –
1. Bacterial infections – bacteria are found everywhere – from water bodies to the soil to our bodies and cause infections such as chlamydia, strep throat, tuberculosis, syphilis, gonorrhoea, cholera, tetanus and Lyme disease.
2. Parasitic infections – Tapeworm and roundworm infection, malaria, scabies, pubic and head lice are some common types of parasitic infections, causes fleas, lice and ticks.
3. Viral infections – The most common type of infections is caused by viruses. Common cold, flu, chickenpox, polio, measles, rubella, HIV, Ebola and rabies are a few types of viral infections.
4. Fungal infections – Infections such as ringworm, fungal meningitis and vaginal yeast infections are fungal infections caused by yeast, moulds and other fungi.
The symptoms of each infection can vary, but a few common symptoms are fever, fatigue, cough, sneezing, nausea and chills. If you observe any of these symptoms, you should consult a doctor and get tested for infections, as recommended. Depending on your symptoms, you may be advised to get a blood infection test, nasal test, stool test or a urine culture test.
