Hypertension
Commonly known as high blood pressure, hypertension is the condition wherein your blood pressure reaches very high levels.
It is a very common condition. It develops over the years and its symptoms are not obvious, making it a dangerous condition as it can damage our blood vessels and organs such as the brain, eyes, kidneys and the heart.
People suffering from severe hypertension may experience symptoms such as dizziness, headache, chest pain, shortness of breath, flushing and blood in the urine.
There are two types of hypertension – primary and secondary. Primary hypertension, the more common type, occurs due to a combination of factors such as physical changes, lifestyle changes and genetic factors. Secondary hypertension is caused by other underlying issues.
Regular testing for blood pressure is important for early detection. A blood pressure machine or cuff is used to take a physical reading. If the blood pressure level is elevated, then further hypertension tests such as a blood test for cholesterol or thyroid, a urine test or an ultrasound may be performed.
