In our body, the red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to all the tissues and organs. When the number of red blood cells is low, our body doesn’t get enough oxygen. This condition is called Anaemia.
Every day, 0.8 to 1% of the red blood cells in our body are replaced. Their lifespan ranges between 100 and 120 days. Anaemia causes an imbalance in the production of RBC’s. The underlying reasons behind this are –
• hypothyroidism
• iron, folate or vitamin B12 deficiency
• reduced stimulation of RBC production
Other reasons such as genetic disorders, menstruation, endometriosis, childbirth or accidents cause RBC’s to get destroyed.
People who suffer from anaemia experience symptoms such as brittle nails, dizziness, pale skin, shortness of breath and feeling cold.
The most common cause of Anaemia is an iron deficiency. Although to determine the exact problem, it is best to get a hemogram test or an iron deficiency test. This would help you understand the severity of the condition and accordingly devise a treatment plan.
